Before the build begins

A little prep goes a long way. Here’s what to know before you unpack your kit and get started.

Plan your time

Most sheds take 1–5 days to build, depending on the shed size and your level of experience.

Build with help

Plan for 1–2 people to complete the project safely, especially when raising walls and setting roof components.

Gather your tools

Have your drill, hammer, nail gun, caulk, paint, shingles, and other project materials ready before you begin.

Check the details before you build.

Before choosing your final shed location, check whether your local building department or HOA requires approval for the shed size, style, or placement.

Step 2

Prepare your site for a smoother build.

Pick a flat, dry location and leave at least 3–4 feet of clearance around all sides and overhead. Be sure to check local setback requirements, which are often 5–10 feet.

Set your baseBuild on level ground, a compacted gravel pad, leveling blocks, or a concrete slab.

Floor

Build a solid base to support your shed.

Assemble walls on your floor, then raise them into place.

Rafters

Install the rafters and roof decking.

Windows & Accessories

Set windows into openings and add accessories.

Shingles

Install roofing to manufacturer specifications. Shingles and roofing accessories are optional and sold separately.

Door

Prehung doors are designed for easier installation.

Trim & Hardware

Add exterior trim and install door hardware for a finished look.

Final Touches

Touch up paint once your shed is assembled.
